The modules below have been created for caregivers in the Waiora Tamariki Programme, to support children’s eating.

Identifying and understanding your child’s feeding difficulty is the first step in making progress towards competent eating. The focus of this module is how to recognize the difficulties your child might be experiencing during mealtimes. Once you have identified your child’s eating difficulty that concerns you, this module will help you set some achievable and realistic goals for your child’s eating.

This module covers:
  • How to identify your child’s feeding difficulty
  • How Autism affects eating
  • Feeding assessment tools
  • Goal setting

It is important to think about we can support healthy eating habits. This module will focus on the role of nutrition and appetite and its overall impact on your child’s feeding difficulties.

This module covers:
  • How to introduce new foods
  • Age-appropriate portion sizes
  • The role of mealtime routines in promoting appetite
  • Strategies to help set a mealtime routine

The focus of this module is to learn about the events that occur before or during mealtime that affect your child’s eating and mealtime behaviour. This module will also provide you with strategies for things you can do ahead of time that might make the mealtime more positive and help your child become a competent eater.

This module covers:
  • The ABC’s of behaviour
  • Before meal antecedent strategies
  • During meal antecedent strategies
  • Interaction/social strategies

It is important to think about the consequences that affect your child’s eating. This is often either rewards for positive behaviour and ignoring disruptive behaviour. The focus of this module is on how to identify the consequences that affect your child’s eating and provide you with strategies for things you can do in response to your child’s eating or not eating.

This module covers:
  • The role of consequences in feeding difficulties
  • Rewards for positive behaviour and ignoring disruptive behaviour
  • How to use rewards
  • Strategies for things you can do in response to your child’s eating or not eating

Reflecting on what you have learnt and creating a plan is an important step for implementing the strategies correctly and ensuring you make progress to reach your whanau’s goals.

  • Reflection
  • Planning antecedent strategies to implement
  • Planning consequence strategies to implement for eating and disruptive mealtime behaviours.
