It is often simple to determine whether your child has a sleep problem, but how do you select the best possible strategies to use to reduce these sleep problems and increase independent sleep?

This module covers:

  • Sleep assessment tools
  • How to make sense of your child’s sleep problems
  • How to select strategies that support independent sleep
  • Steps in treatment planning
  • Important considerations for treatment planning
  • Understanding how much sleep your child needs, and when they should be sleeping, can be difficult. The focus of this module is on how to select an age-appropriate bedtime and wake time, and the steps that you can take to reach that goal.

    This module covers:

  • The role of circadian rhythms in sleep
  • Recommended sleep times
  • How to select an age-appropriate sleep/wake time
  • Strategies for modifying your child’s sleep/wake times
  • It is important to think about how we can support healthy sleep habits. This is often referred to as ‘sleep hygiene’.  The bedtime routine, bedroom environment, and even our daytime activities are important factors contributing toward our sleep hygiene.

    This module covers:

  • Features of good sleep hygiene
  • Establishing a sleep-supporting bedtime routine
  • The importance of a consistent sleep environment
  • Using the bed only for sleep
  • There are a number of things that we can do to (a) reduce children’s sleep-interfering behaviour, and (b) increase sleep-conducive behaviour. Nonetheless, it can be difficult to determine what we might need to change and how we might go about doing so.

    This module covers:

  • Strategies to reduce sleep-interfering behaviour
  • Strategies to increase sleep-conducive behaviour
  • Selecting the best strategies for your child and family
  • When addressing sleep problems it is important to consider some of the skills that we can teach children and young people the skills that they need to help them to learn to fall asleep independently and remain asleep throughout night. There are a number of strategies and tools that can be used, with this in mind.

    This module covers:

  • The use of visual supports and other teaching aides
  • Relaxation strategies
  • Bedtime fears
  • When repetitive behaviours occur in the sleep context, they can be soothing for some, while for others they can interfere with their ability to settle to sleep. It is important to consider the role that repetitive behaviours may play in your child’s sleep and whether this requires further assessment and treatment.

    This module covers:

  • The interaction between repetitive behaviours and sleep
  • Strategies to prevent sleep-interfering repetitive behaviour
  • Strategies to reduce sleep-interfering repetitive behaviour
